Encounter 12: Story Encounter Text

Success Results | Failure Results |
In the dim evening light, NAME followed two mysteriously bobbing lights to an opening in the ground. It was a dungeon passage, and it seemed to lead out under the lake! Suddenly the glowing orbs spun toward NAME. Will-o'-wisps!
| |
NAME didn't know what would happen if they touched him/her, but all the stories of will-o'-wisps NAME could remember made him/her certain it wouldn't be good. NAME dove away from the glowing orbs as they came spinning at him/her. Coming out of his/her roll, NAME jumped into the dungeon, escaping the glowing orbs and then looting the corpse of an adventurer who had not been so fortunate.
|
NAME stared at the will-o'-wisps as they flew right at her/him. Too late, NAME remembered that the beautiful lights were said to be deadly. As they came near, NAME felt her/his life ebbing away and, staggering back, NAME fell into the dungeon, where he looted the corpse of an adventurer who had not managed to escape.

Encounter 17: Final Encounter Text

Success Results | Failure Results |
NAME entered a vaulted chamber illuminated by the golden radiance of a giant gem. The light reflected from glass panes set in the high ceiling, beyond which NAME could see fish swimming. The chamber must have extended into the lake bottom. Surrounding the gem lay bodies in various states of decay -- no doubt the victims of the lake lights. While NAME pondered this, a robed woman stepped from behind the pedestal. "Beautiful, isn't it? Look deeply into its light."
| |
Realizing that the light must kill, NAME shut her/his eyes. Unable to see, NAME couldn't fight the woman. Recalling where the gem stood, NAME ATTACKED it with her/his WEAPON TYPE, and it exploded, throwing NAME off her/his feet. Upon opening her/his eyes, NAME saw the woman lying dead, a shard of gem embedded in her head. The threat to the lake was ended, and NAME gained a tidy sum -- in gem pieces.
|
NAME looked curiously at the woman, but his/her eyes were then drawn to the gem. Almost too late, NAME realized that the gem's light must hypnotize and maybe even kill. Throwing an arm over his/her face, NAME knelt and cast about for something to block out the light. His/her hand grabbed some clothing from one of the bodies and he/she staggered out of the chamber, eyes stinging and head aching.
