He?d interrupted his/her attempt to sneak down a winding corridor, and NAME figured it was better to fight than to run blindly down an unknown passage.

NAME was spying on a couple of human lackeys and planning her/his attack when the telltale clanking footsteps of a warforged echoed behind her/him. A warforged soldier in plate armor, sword and shield at the ready, came stalking up the hall, drawing the humans' attention to NAME. Stealth no longer an option, NAME switched to Plan B -- violence.

(found in Scourge of the Seas, encounter #10)

Wielding her/his WEAPON with expert skill, NAME laid into the warforged before the lackeys could even get to her/him with their clubs. Watching the tough warforged get ATTACKED gave the lackeys something to think about it, and they ran off in different directions. NAME helped her/himself to the valuable bracers on the warforged's arms. Wielding his/her WEAPON with skill (and a prayer for good luck), NAME laid into the warforged. Soon, however, the lackeys were on to him/her too, and the battle turned south. NAME ATTACKED the lackeys with ease, but the warforged fought with resolve to a long, bitter, end. NAME was in a large chamber searching a promising wall carved with mesmerizing swirls and spirals for secret doors and other hidden features. The massive double doors at the end of the chamber opened, and in marched a procession of robed devotees hauling a blasphemous monstrosity on a litter. The thing, part toad and part nightmare, rolled its several eyes around the room and blinked.

(found in Hidden Shrine of Nahautl, encounter #6,8)

NAME understood that secret doors would have to wait, and she/he slipped quietly behind a pillar. Hidden, she/he listened for half an hour as the worshipers engaged in unholy rites, trying not to picture what she/he was hearing. And then the group of worshipers departed, closing the massive doors behind them. Unshaken, NAME set about searching for secret doors again, and found one. NAME understood that secret doors would have to wait, and she/he tried to slip unnoticed behind a stone pillar. Unfortunately, the thing on the litter had one eye too many, and it bellowed the alarm when it spotted NAME. She/he beat feet out a side exit (grabbing some valuables along the way), but the very presence of the unholy creature seemed to have weakened her/he greatly.

NAME was in a large chamber searching a promising wall carved with mesmerizing swirls and spirals for secret doors and other hidden features. The massive double doors at the end of the chamber opened, and in marched a procession of robed devotees hauling a blasphemous monstrosity on a litter. NAME understood that secret doors would have to wait, and she/he slipped quietly behind a pillar. NAME followed the sound of guttural chanting to a large chamber which had clearly been the site of countless blood sacrifices over the years. In the shadow of a crude statue, an orc priest rose from his prayers and beckoned to his pet dire wolf.

The orc's chaos hammer laid NAME out flat, and the wolf attacked him/her. With the keen insight that comes from wisdom and experience, NAME could see by the wolf's manner that it feared rather than loved its master. NAME turned his/her WEAPON on the orc and ATTACKED him. With that, the wolf bounded away -- which was fine, really, because the orc had all the treasure. The orc's chaos hammer laid NAME out flat, and the wolf attacked her/him. NAME got to her/his feet and ATTACKED the wolf with her/his WEAPON. The orc attacked with her spear, but soon enough NAME had hacked him, too. NAME acquired certain personal valuables that had heretofore been the orc's.

NAME smashed through another line of cultists, entering into some sort of ritual chamber. All sorts of evil artifacts lay about, so NAME needed to decide what to smash, and how.

  • Wisdom check with a difficulty of 19

(found in Adventure in the Forbidden City, encounter #10,12)

(found in Temple of the Four Elements, encounter #7)

NAME started smashing anything that didn't look like it held the imprisoned essence of some long-dead god, and that proved to be a good policy. There was lots of loot among all the smashed stuff, too. NAME smashed a stoppered vase that was sealed with wax, runes, and faintly glowing chains. When the efreet burst out, NAME realized that might not have been the hottest idea. NAME fled the creature's wrath.

From a suspiciously well-polished hallway in the otherwise overgrown temple, NAME heard the faint echoing of a chant: "Plur-bi-us! Plur-bi-us! Plur-bi-us!"

Going that way certainly wasn't a good idea, so he/she took the door on the right and inside found a dining room decorated to the hilt with all manner of gold-plated dishes and solid silver flatware. It might weigh him/her down a little, but he/she was in good shape and could handle the load.

Having grown up near a snake-infested forest, NAME's mother had warned him/her many times to watch out for snakes. What she had never told him/her was to watch out for people that turn into snakes. Right in the middle of a fight, the soldier NAME had just wounded transformed into a snake and struck with surprising speed.

(found in Raid on Nightmare Castle, encounter #13,14,15)

(found in Temple of the Four Elements, encounter #7,11,13)

Uncoiling in mid-air, the serpent's fangs barely missed his/her neck. It landed on his/her shoulder and tried to encircle him/her. NAME was too skilled to allow that to happen, and slew the snake before it could transform into anything else.

Early in their careers, every adventurer hears some veteran tell at least one story about fighting displacer beasts -- how difficult it is to find the beast's real body, how vicious they are, the threatening reach of its tentacles . . .

(found in Raid on Nightmare Castle, encounter #14x2)

(found in Temple of the Four Elements, encounter #7&11,13x3)

Frankly, NAME didn't know what all the fuss was about. She/he connected with her/his WEAPONTYPE on the first and second tries. The third try, not necessary.
  • 198 XP

It was all true, in NAME's opinion. She/he repeatedly missed the beast, and was repeatedly lashed by its tentacles. Resorting to a blind rage, NAME thought she/he managed to graze it a few times and somehow scared it off with her/his exaggerated display of vitality. Her/his arms felt like floppy noodles for a while afterwards, but it didn't stop her/him from looting the beast's lair.

After "discovering" a golden idol in the temple, NAME was confronted by a group of warriors wearing low-quality armor. They did not look happy.

(found in Raid on Nightmare Castle, encounter #13,14,15,17)

(found in Temple of the Four Elements, encounter #7,11)

He/she held the idol aloft and stood proudly before them, refusing to allow his/her trepidation to show. The warriors appeared stunned at the sight of the idol, and bowed low before NAME. He/she made use of their distraction to run like a scared child.

He/She held up the idol, almost meekly. The warriors were not impressed. Several of them yelled something NAME could not understand and charged. NAME?s [sic] progress in looting a shrine was interrupted by a snaketongue warrior, a human "blessed" with serpentine features. More noteworthy than its snaky looks, however, was its poisoned greatsword.

Howling hags aren't called howling hags for nothing. Sure enough, this one howled at NAME the moment they met.

(found in Raid on Nightmare Castle, encounter #13,14,15)

(found in Temple of the Four Elements, encounter #7,11,13)

The screech was more annoying than painful. NAME thought he/she felt himself/herself slide back an inch or two, but not nearly far enough to knock him/her into the pit of snakes behind him/her. NAME had less trouble than expected dispatching the hag with his/her WEAPON.

The deafening blast rocked NAME to his core and even less fortunately, pushed him back several feet and right into the pit of snakes below. Why did it have to be snakes? The powerful stench clued NAME in that troglodytes were hiding nearby.

(found in Raid on Nightmare Castle, encounter #13,15,17)

(found in Temple of the Four Elements, encounter #7,11,13)

NAME nearly gagged from the smell when the first troglodyte mauler appeared. It and four more died in the narrow passageway, then a curse chanter showed up and tried to poison NAME with a magical ray. Failing that it took a more direct approach, which only resulted in its death at NAME's hands. Next time, NAME told herself, she/he should bring some incense . . . phew! The smell was overpowering, and NAME fell to her knees as the first mauler came around the corner of the narrow passageway. Gagging and flailing, she somehow managed to kill four of them before facing a curse chanter. It chanted and cursed NAME with some sort of poisonous ray. She backed away as rapidly as she could, leaving her last meal behind.

The chanting in the temple had reached a fevered pitch, and whatever horrible incantation was being uttered started to take a physical toll on NAME. He/she realized that this was some sort of ward keeping him/her from reaching a particular room -- perhaps a treasure chamber?

(found in Raid on Nightmare Castle, encounter #13,15,16,17)

(found in Temple of the Four Elements, encounter #9,15)

NAME fought off the magical compulsion and forced open the door. Oh yeah -- loot city! The crushing waves of foul magic hammered NAME's resolve, and he/she fled the warded door. There probably wasn't any good treasure in there anyway. Yeah, that's the ticket.

The temple must not have hired a regular cleaning service. Instead, it figured that a few large carrion crawlers would take out the trash. Unfortunately, to them NAME looks like the trash.

(found in Temple of the Four Elements, encounter #9,13,15)

The crawlers' paralyzing touch was tough to overcome, but NAME hadn't gotten this far by wussing out every time a tentacled horror got uppity. Another victory for NAME! The crawlers' paralyzing touch proved too much to overcome, and NAME got chomped on repeatedly. Ouch.

NAME knew he/she was in the wrong room of the temple when the walls and ceiling dematerialized, leaving he/him on the slope of some misbegotten, rocky mountain in the Shadowfell, at night, during a snowstorm. She/he could still see the door that led back into the temple, but it was far away across a forbidding, frigid rock field.

(found in ADVENTURE, encounter #XX)

NAME shielded his/her face from the biting wind and picked her/his way back across the rocks. He/She recognized some of the rocks as ingots of magical metal, and he/she helped himself/herself to them. Soon, NAME was back in the sane world and shut the door behind him/her.

A mysterious force was dragging NAME around the next corner. When he/she rounded it he/she was greeted with an amazing sight that he/she would not soon forget. A being that appeared to be made entirely out of the night sky, incongruously dressed in torn rags, stood before him/her. It was beautiful, almost mesmerizing. It was also sucking NAME toward it with a clearly malicious intent!

(found in Temple of the Four Elements, encounter #9,15)

It reached out its hand and NAME felt the Corpse Star's powerful grip try to drag him/her to his/her certain doom. Fearing the worst would happen if (s)he got closer to the mysterious creature, (s)he resisted with all his/her body and soul. One step at a time (s)he was able to back away from the creature. When (s)he ran around the next corner (s)he tripped over a small unlocked treasure chest. It reached out its hand and NAME felt the Corpse Star's powerful grip try to drag him/her to his/her certain doom. Fearing the worst would happen if he/she got closer to the mysterious creature, he/she resisted with all his body and soul. Unfortunately, it was not enough, and he/she was jerked violently toward the Corpse Star creature. Just before his/her face plowed into the night sky personified, the pulling force caused a wall to collapse on the monster from behind. NAME was injured by falling rocks, but the collapse exposed a new path with a few gold coins on the floor.

The builders of this temple sure had a thing for tough locks. NAME faced a lock that required the rapid and precise movement of two metal pegs. They had to simultaneously be moved from one hole to the next, along a series that covered half the wall.

(found in Raid on Nightmare Castle, encounter #13,14,15,16,17)

(found in Temple of the Four Elements, encounter #7,11,13)

On the third try, NAME did it perfectly, and the door slid open. The chamber beyond was decorated with quite a few valuables, and beyond that laid a few exciting adventures. After failing fifteen times, NAME gave up on ever having the coordination required to master the lock. That was when he/she realized the pegs were made of silver and tipped with rubies. He didn't think anyone will be opening that lock ever again.

It was just a thin rope over what seemed a bottomless pit, nothing to be afraid of -- or so NAME thought to himself as he/she approached the edge. The gem-encrusted statue sitting on the other side seemed to be calling to him/her.

(found in Raid on Nightmare Castle, encounter #15,16)

(found in Temple of the Four Elements, encounter #7,11,13)

With grace that surprised even him/herself, NAME crossed the rope without incident. The idol wasn't the only thing of value on the other side. Someone had left a nice piece of gear here as well. Not even halfway across, NAME lost his/her balance and plummeted twelve feet into the black water below. The lighting above was so poor that the water was nearly impossible to see. He/She swam to the far side and clambered out onto the landing, only to come face to face with an idol identical to the one above. In revenge for the whole tightrope thing, NAME smashed the smug little idol, scooped up the loose gems, and swam back the way he/she came from.

NAME had entered a room and grabbed some loot therein when he heard an ominous click. Suddenly the room began to fill with gas from above and water from below, the walls and ceiling closed in, spikes sprang from the floor, and poisoned arrows shot out of the walls. Now THAT'S a trap!

(found in Raid on Nightmare Castle, encounter #13,14,15,16)

(found in Raid on Nightmare Castle, encounter #13,15,16,17)

(found in Temple of the Four Elements, encounter #7,9,13,15)

NAME nimbly avoided the dragon's blast of flame and expertly picked the dragon's defenses apart. And after the killing . . . the looting! NAME got a full blast of the dragon's flaming breath and made a break for it. Ow! Hot! Hot! Hot!

Naturally, NAME could easily fight the gnoll demonic scourge, two gnoll claw fighters, and gnoll huntsmaster all at once, but he/she preferred to take care of them in a more interesting fashion.

(found in Raid on Nightmare Castle, encounter #13,14,15,16,17)

(found in Temple of the Four Elements, encounter #7,11)

Coming up to a corner in the passageway, he/she ran up the wall, kicked off, did a twist in the air, and came down precisely on the shoulders of the gnoll scourge. They both fell to the ground, but NAME nimbly landed on its chest in a squatting position and snaked his/her hands through the gnoll's flailing arms to loop the chain of its own flail around its neck. While it struggled to free itself, he/she ducked around the corner and braced her/his trusty ten-foot pole between the walls, just inches from the floor. Only a second later, the rest of the gnoll squad came barreling around the corner and tripped on the pole, making the lot of them easy pickings for NAME. Coming up to a corner in the passageway, he/she attempted to run up the wall, kick off, do a twist in the air, and come down precisely on the shoulders of the gnoll scourge. Instead he/she put a foot or two on the wall, kicked straight off of it, and rocketed the top of his/her head into the gnoll scourge's snout. They collapsed in a heap on the foor. The rest of the gnolls caught up, and a difficult battle ensued. Only by pure luck did NAME survive. The gnoll leader remained unconscious on the floor until the others had been dispatched.

NAME thought it odd that dozens of gold coins in a simple coin box would not be guarded, so he/she was not all that surprised when the floor opened up and he/she fell into a deep shaft with water at the bottom. Inhabited water.

(found in Temple of the Four Elements, encounter #7)

NAME expertly stopped his/her fall by bracing himself/herself against the inside of the shaft without dropping too many coins. While hungry and disappointed creatures snapped the air futilely, he/she worked his/her way back up the pit.
  • 153 XP

NAME tried to stop his/her fall by bracing him/herself against the inside of the shaft, but failed. He/she dropped most of the coins into the water, and had fallen in range of the snapping jaws below. He/she eventually managed to clamber out of the pit, but was much the worse for wear.

Why ancient peoples never wrote anything in a common, modern languages NAME did not understand. Didn't they know how much of a pain it would be for future adventurers to take the gold they'd left behind if they marked everything with cryptic, indecipherable symbols?

(found in Raid on Nightmare Castle, encounter #12,13,14,15,16,17)

(found in Temple of the Four Elements, encounter #7,11,13)

Well, not totally indecipherable for NAME. With the words elucidated, the order in which the hexagonal stones set into the wall should be pushed was quite clear. The ornate crystal crown revealed by pressing them was even more clear. NAME felt enriched by the whole experience.

A much louder grinding sound made NAME look up again in time to see a giant boulder rolling into the room -- and straight for him/her!
